Middle School

General Criteria for Sight-Reading Exercises

1. There are three exercises of eight measures and one exercise of 4 measures (28 total). The minimum passing score is eight measures. 


2. The range of the exercises should not exceed a Major 6th and should not be lower than; Middle C for the Treble voice (C4), C below Middle C for the Baritone voice (C3) and G below Middle C for the Changing Voice (G3). The range should not be higher than; C above middle C for the Treble voice (C5), Middle C for the Baritone (C4) and F above Middle C for the Changing voice (F4).

Exercise #1

  • Key C Major (Treble/Bari), G Major (Changing Voice) 
  • Pitch Stepwise, diatonic, with repeated notes 
  • Meter 4/4 
  • Duration Quarter, half and whole notes, no rests

Exercise #2

  • Key Same as number 1 
  • Pitch Stepwise, diatonic, with repeated notes and skips limited to the tonic triad 
  • Meter 3/4
  •  Duration   Quarter, Dotted Quarter with eighth, Half, and Dotted Half Notes, Quarter rests

Exercise #3

  • Key D Major (Treble/Bari), A Major (Changing Voice) 
  • Pitch Stepwise, diatonic, skips limited to the tonic triad at the beat level 
  • Meter 3/4 or 4/4 
  • Duration Eighth, Quarter, Half, Dotted Half and Whole notes, Quarter and Eighth rests

Exercise #4

  • Key D (Treble/Bari), A Major (Changing Voice) 
  • ​Pitch Stepwise, diatonic, with repeated notes, Do-So Range.
  • Meter​ 6/8 
  • Duration​ Eighth, Quarter, Dotted Quarter, No Rests

Senior High

General Criteria for Sight-Reading Exercises

1. There are five exercises of eight measures (40 total). The minimum passing score is ten measures.                                                

2. The range of the exercises should not exceed a Major 9th and should not be lower than B flat below middle C or higher than E in the second octave above middle C (and octave lower for bass clef.)

Exercise #1

  • Key C Major 
  • Pitch Stepwise, diatonic 
  • Meter 4/4 
  • Duration Whole, half and quarter notes in measures 1 – 4; dotted quarter and eighth notes added in measures 5 – 8

Exercise #2

  • Key F Major 
  • Pitch Stepwise, diatonic, with skips limited to Tonic triad on the beat level, lower neighbor approach to the Tonic or Dominant, or upper neighbor approach to the Dominant 
  • Meter 3/4 or 4/4 2 
  • Duration Add rests at the beat level (quarter notes)

Exercise #3

  • Key d minor, harmonic form 
  • Pitch Stepwise, diatonic, with skips on the Tonic triad at the beat level 
  • Meter 3/4 or 4/4  
  • Duration Beat and division level notes with passing eighths and/or a one beat triplet on repeated notes

Exercise #4

  • Key G Major or D Major Pitch Stepwise, diatonic, with skips on the Tonic triad 
  • Meter 6/8 or 6/4 (compound duple) 4
  • Duration Add dotted quarter rest, dotted eighth and sixteenth notes

Exercise #5

  • Key C Major 
  • Pitch Stepwise and skips on the Tonic, Sub-Dominant and Dominant Triads, chromatic alterations of the 4th (fi), and 7th (te) approached Stepwise. 
  • Meter 4/4, 3/4 or 6/8  
  • Duration All values previously used plus dotted eighths/sixteenths, syncopation at the division level and ties across the bar line.
